The origin of the Cantalauze vineyard estate (Domaine de Cantalauze) dates back to the mid 19th century when it was first planted by the great grandfather of the previous owners. It covers some 72 hectares (180 acres) of vines, olives, pines, fields and lovely country walks.
The main body of buildings including the "Cave" (with over 400,000 litres of wine storage tanks) and the old farmhouse with pigeon loft (pigeonnier), date back to this period. They have been untouched until now and retain all the original beams, livestock equipment and architectural features.
This private secluded estate is to be found in the Languedoc region of South West France, bordering the famous Canal du Midi, some 4 miles south east of Carcassonne and its World Heritage site of 'La Cite', Europes largest restored Medieval walled city.
Acquired by the current owner in 2003, the estate is undergoing a 5 year restoration and development programme which encompasses the production of wine, covering some 32 hectares (80 acres) of the estate, together with the careful conversion of the old agricultural buildings and farm houses to establish a hamlet of 6 luxury houses for rent. The end result will be a harmonious blend of character period properties, with all the necessary modern amenities you could wish for, sitting comfortably within a classic working french vineyard. The surrounding estate provides ample scope for walks, boating on the canal, as well as the chance to relax by the swimming pools or dine al fresco in the lovely pool house, all of which you will find nestling in the old walled garden. And if you enjoy a glass of wine be sure to sample some of the excellent wine produced from the estate's annual grape harvest.
Easily reached by car from the main Toulouse to Narbonne motorway or a short drive from Carcassonne international airport, finding us couldn't be simpler.
After exploring Carcassonne and the Canal the more adventurous visitors may enjoy the nearby attractions of the Mediterranean beaches, coastal towns such as Perpignan, the local capital of Toulouse and of course the famous Cathar towns and ruined castles. Barcelona is only 2 1/2 hours away and sking in the Pyrenees even closer.
The unique experience of a stay at Cantalauze (the name is derived from a mix of Ocitan and French meaning the "Sound of the stone", referring to the cliffs on the estate overlooking the Canal ) will be one that hopefully no visitor will ever forget.
